i got a new engine it came with a electronic dist, the old one was points and condensor, i tried to set the timing on this new engine by putting the connector in the distributor and hooking the 2 white wires together and putting 12 volts to the other one, i did it with the engine running and i tried it with the engine off and the timing stays where i put it, in other words if my timing is at 12 deg btdc and i hook up the timing shunt it stays there, if i take the timing shunt out it is still at 12deg. i know the timing procedure says to use this shunt but it says the timing will advance when you remove this shunt, is there a way just to put the timing at a certain degree without using the shunt, i have even tried another icm module for the distributor and no difference. when i hook up this shunt there should be a change in the timing if it was at 12 deg right? thank you ahead of time

Hook the 2 whites together with a jumper wire, depress the shift interrupt swith. timing should be at 1, release shift interrupt and timing will advance to 12.(Shunt plugs are used on omc and volvo applicatons)

thank you rod knock , there is no wire going to the shift cut out switch on this plug, this is just a plug you plug in to set timing, when you push in on the cut out switch what is it doing sending 12 volts to that module? is what iam doing just running 12 volts to the wire on the connector and hooking the 2 whites together doing the same. thank you keith

When you hook the two white wires together the engine will not die when shift interrupt is hit. its in base timing. unplug your jumper and it will die. IF its a merc distributor. Does it have a place for a shunt plug?Which distributor do you have? If it has a shunt (3wire plug one looped) then attatch the shunt to 12v+ and put it in base timing.Unplug and itll go up

Re: 3.0 timing trouble (2001 motor mercruiser)

thanks rod knock when i bought the motor it just came with the 2 wire plug going to the distributor from the coil, the other 4 pron slot next to it was empty, i took a regular gm ditributor connector and i called the guy i got the motor from and he told me which wires were on his timing shunt and i just used these ones like that one would plug in, if you are looking at the distributor the slot where the timing connector would plug in the far left terminal is not used, the one next to it gets 12 volts and the other 2 would represent the 2 white wires and they get hooked together to set timing. i did all this and the timing does not change. can i just put it at 12 btdc or not, what iam doing with this gm connector is the same thing the regular timing connector would do iam told so i should not have to hook the cutout switch together if there is no wire going to it should i , thank rod knock i know this is confusing iam not to good at explaining myself on here thanks again keith

Re: 3.0 timing trouble (2001 motor mercruiser)

If you have a MERC you can just hold the switch to the tripped position. if its jumpered it will not die that puts it in BASE TIMING. ADJ to 1 when you let off the switch it should return to approx. 12 degrees.Hooking the wires together only makes the connection just as tripping the switch would do. HOW CAN I MAKE THIS ANY EASIER 4u? If You have a merc Distributor YOU DONT USE A SHUNT PLUG!!!!you hook the 2 white wires together and trip the switch.PORK CHOP (haha love that name) Re read my first post. Do THAT and time your engine. :D
