i just put a 2001 3.0 motor in my 1987 boat, it has est distributor, it came without the connector in the icm module to set the timing, i have a regular gm connector to plug in there. i had a guy tell me that has the timing connector which wires on my connector are the same, if you are pluged into the distributor the wire all the way left is not used and the next one to that is your 12volts and the other 2 get hooked together to set base timing. i have tried to put it in base timing mode while the engine is running and it stays where i have it at 12 btdc. i dont think i have to put the shift interupt wires together because it isnt hooked to this plug, i think hooking them together just puts 12 volts to the plug anyway. i would appreciate input on this thank you

Re: 3.0 timing

you cant or dont want to go to base timming with engine running, turn it off then install shunt (you have to use this) then it has to go to battery pwr to put it to base. the 2 wire conector on the left is for pwr and tach, the other is left alone just used for setting base timing. a shunt loops two termanals together then the other terminal gets battery pwr to put the module into base time. hope it helps A.D. the shunt does not cost much!!

Re: 3.0 timing

thank you AD maybe thats the problem, i was trying to put it into base timing mode with the engine already running. i know there are 2 plugs on the icm at the distributor the left connector is for power from the coil and tach (gray) the other connector where you set your base timing has 4 terminals in it, i have a gm connector that fits in that connector because when the engine came to me it didnt have nothing in this plug on the icm, what iam doing is using the connector i have and making a timing shunt out of it, so if iam holding this connector in my hand and iam looking at the back of it where the 4 wires come out the one on the far left is not used and the one next to it gets 12 volts to it and the other 2 would represent the 2 white ones on the timing shunt so i hook them together does this seem right, i have tried to find this timing shunt and no one knows what iam talking about, i tried even auto stores, i dont see why the orginal gm connector that i have wont work if i modify it as i have told you the wires go, thank you so much keith
