This is my first time so I will try and be brief. I just bought a 99 chaparral with a 3.0 Volvo Penta in it for super cheap. The guy told me that it had a good out drive but the motor was locked up. I'm very handy and good at fixing things but this is my first boat project. I need some advice on where to start to find the problem. Obviously I want to start from the least involved to most. If I need to pull the motor, I will. Any advice will be much appreciated! Thank you.

Re: 3.0 Volvo Penta locked up. Please help!

Hi W,
I have a 3.0 also that I'm working on. I would recommend taking plugs off and spraying some WD40 down the holes. Let is soak for a while... I would remove the impeller housing on the front (after removing the belt) and expose the splined tip of crank shaft that spins impeller. Put a 9/16 or 14mm on it (star point socket - the 6point won't fit) and CAREFULLY and slow try to turn the crank shaft. With some luck you may bet it to move and come unstuck.

GO slow so you don't strip or break anything... hopefully you get it moving and than you have to do all the regular crap like changing oils, plugs and filters, before you let the starter take a swing at it. If starter turns it than I would do a compression test on all cylinders to see if they're good now that they're moving. You go from there....

Good luck

Thank you so much!! It's nice to have some starting point. I will give that a try this week and go from there.
