I have a 1979 Silverline with a 3.0 (140hp)Mercruiser. The engine is quite noisy and frankly, uses way more fuel than I thought it would. I bought the 4 cylinder because I am trying to save a bit compared to my previous 190 Mercruiser. The service department where I moor stated that the replacement motor for this one puts out 167hp. I have never seen a Mercruiser 3.0 advertised at 167hp. Also, would a replacement motor give me a quieter ride and better fuel economy? Cost stated from him - $2,900 plus 6 hrs labor. gekog@shaw.ca

gekog,

THe prop. rating for the 3.0L is 135. I would suspect it's somewhere around 150 at the crank.

It could be as high as the wrench says.

I doubt it would be much better economy wise, unless your current engine is sick.

The price sounds about right for a "drop in" running ass'y.

Thanks...any comments about whether the new engine would run any quieter?

gekog,

Probably not. That line of engines was never accused of being quiet.

Perhaps some engine box insulation is in order.

Re: 3.0 vs 3.0

I just reinsulated the engine box with about 2 inches of household fiberglass covered by the silver bubble type insulation used around hot water tanks etc. Is there something better I could be using?
