The "volvo" brand oil is very expensive and is only 30 weight oil. Would Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic be an acceptable substitute?

Why would you want to put 5 weight oil in a boat!? Jeez! At least use 10-40W, or 20-50W, for the summer (remember a boat engine is stressed like running your car around in 2nd gear all the time) IMO any good brand of oil, or synthetic blend, or full synthetic, such as Castrol, Quaker state, Penzoil, Mobil, Valvoline, etc. should be fine, as long as you have the right weight.

Well you don't have to use Volvo "brand" either.

Just find one of these and change it at least once a year preferably right before winter layup.

Volvo doesn't refine oil nor do they manufacture additives. In fact very few oil marketers are related to the refiners in any way other than to market oil to end-user consumers.

Cheers,

Rick

Rule of thumb: Use what the manufacturer says. Avoid amateur "oil engineers".
This goes for everything, snowmobiles, outboards, cycles, all that stuff.
The proper oil is the cheapest thing you can put in your engine. Order the Volvo synthetic oil right here at iboats, along with the filter and gear oil and orings. Keep the receipts to show the next owner and then smile all the way to the bank as you are depositing the extra money from your boat sale. Conversely, you could show him your cheesy Walmart oil receipts (and maybe motor repair bills) but don't be surprised if he doesn't buy your boat.

Bull..........

As long as you're using Oil that's rated as high, or higher than the Recommended Oil Rating,.......

No Problem..........

Btw,........
I run Mobil 1, in 15W-50 in my 4.3LX..........
