3.0L GM Mercruiser, water in oil

This post will be rather long but I want to explain everything I've done so you will have all the information, and might be able to help. Last winter I bought a 1991 Larson F&S with a 3.0 L Mercruiser and alpha 1 outdrive. The story he gave me is that he picked up some trash while boating in the Arkansas River and over heated the engine. It was pretty bad all the exhaust hoses had to be replaced. And since he said it was running so bad and had water in the oil I pulled the head and replaced the headgasket. Really didn't find anything as far as head gasket. I put it all back together, replaced the water pump in the lower unit. I then hooked it up to water hose and started the engine, everything seemed fine. I took it to the lake and ran it for a couple of hours, still getting water in the oil. After talking to a guy at Travis Boating here in Little Rock, I realized I didn't replace the flapper valve in the exhaust. I replaced it and a friend of mine borrowed the boat for a week on the lake. Well it got a lot of water in it, raised the oil level on the dipstick past halfway. That was last fall, so I winterized it and parked it over the winter. I finally got to start back working on it last month. I pulled the head and manifold took them to a machine shop I use for my automotive projects. They did not have a plate to fit the head to pressure test it, but did maniflux the head. No cracks showed up in the head. He talked to some guy he knows and he said that there was no way that much water could be getting into the crankcase through the manifold. I have never had any water to show up inside the cylinders, never had hydraulic lock, and the engine runs great from idle to full throttle. So now I'm assuming that it's a cracked block, is this a correct assumption or is there something else I should look at before I pull the engine out?

Thanks in advance,
Delos

One other thing I thought of, the person I bought the boat from said he had always had it winterized, so if that's true then the block wouldn't be cracked from freezing. Will being hot cause a block to crack? I seen some car engine pretty darn hot and not crack, cylinder heads are a different story!

Rod Knocking,
Wouldn't it have been running bad if it had blown the head gasket between 2 & 3? I've already have the head off and the gasket didn't show to be blown anywhere. It did show discoloration between 2&3, but it hadn't blown. Looks like I had a good seal all over the head.

I have another question. I found a late 70's GM 4 cylinder engine. I can buy the complete engine with all accessories for $150.00, but the engine has been setting for 7 years, and the guy really knows nothing about about it. Would this be an old 2.5 L engine? And will the internals out of a 3.0 work in a 2.5? I'm sure it would have to be bored. The engine does turn over and the oil still looked good to have been in there for 7 years. He bought the boat, (it had been setting under a pecan tree for 7 years) for the outdrive.

Delos

Yes it would run bad if it had a blown head gasketbetween 2&3.$150. is cheap for a 3.0 buy it. some 153cu. (2.5)parts will interchange with a 181cu(3.0)but not all Id check with a machine shop.

That's what I was saying in the above post, this engine never missed, ran great from idle to full throttle even with water getting the crankcase.

As far as that used engine, I would have bought it last weekend but I didn't know if the blocks were the same on the 2.5 and 3.0. I know the intake/exhaust manifold is completely different on this engine. I didn't want to buy it just to be buying it, got enough stuff laying around!

Delos

My guess would be, That after you pull the motor,+ flip it over, pull the oil pan.. Look about 3" above the pan rail on the port-side,+ You'll see a Crack.....
The 2.5 vs the 3.0..... The outside dimentions are the same, But little else..... A 2.5 Can't be bored to 3.0..... In other words, They are the same on the outside, but Not inside...

Bondo,

Thanks man, I just reposted the question about the 2.5L/3.0L question again. That helps, I can forget about that engine. Is $350 a good deal on a 3.0L block. He says there are no cracks but will need honing and possible a rebore? Which I expected. Is there any place where I can buy just a block ready to go, where my internals will switch over. Of course I'll use new bearings and rings.

Thanks,
Delos

$350. doesn't sound Too bad..... A rebore will also cost you a new set of pistons to go with those larger holes....
I'm sure there's an Auto/Engine MachineShop somewhere around Benton.... They might be able to fix you up....
