3.0L LX mercruiser starter question

I've just purchased a used 1992 Larson with a 3.0L LX mercruiser and there was no starter in it. I bought one with an 11 tooth gear but it would not engage the flywheel. I could see where the gear was contacting the inside surface if the flywheel but not 'meshing'. Will a 9 tooth solve the problem? I benched the starter and the gear fully engaged so that is not the problem. Thanks.

Hi madmaxII,

Welcome to iBoats.

If you have a Delco-Remy starter and the model number I can give you the right part number for a genuine drive gear. I'm not sure of the number of teeth (never bothered to count 'em). The number you're looking for will be :

#1998317 or
#9000763 (3 1/2" end cap) or
#PG-260 (2 7/8" end cap)

Chris.......

I'm not sure about the LX, but on my 1992 3.0 the replacement was an exact match to what you would get for a 1985 Chevy Camaro 4cyl. $35 at the auto parts store with liftime warranty.

Madmax:

There may be as many as four different starters for a 1992 3.0L. Three are Delco-Remy.

Delco-Remy #1998317
Delco-Remy #9000763 w/3-1/2" end cap
Delco-Remy #PG-260 w/2-7/8" end cap

Check out these schematics, the diagrams and part numbers should help.

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectModels2.asp?type_id=4
