Ok, I found this forum a week or so ago, and have been able to answer all my questions using the search function, save let say, 3.
I recently acquired an 89 maxum with a 3.0 mercruiser for a song and a dance. It needed a little work, and still does. To make a long story short, there was a crack in the outer side or the water jacket, blown head gasket, thrashed raw water impeller, and a general need for maintenance. After reassembling the motor and degreasing, I have had a short in my ignition. I have found some puzzling problems. First off there are 4 wires to the coil. I have determined this so far:
purple = 12v+
gray = tach
black = points
red/yellow = goes to the starter solenoid!?!

I had run the motor, prior to dissassembly with the coil wired:
purple|red/yellow = neg term of coil
gray|black = pos term of coil

It ran like this. Now, I have a dead short accross the coil terminals, and an open line between any teminal and the secondary post. Does this sound correct??? It is an external resistor coil, but I havent found wire one that leads to any resistor.

thanks for taking the time to read my post.
MCarson

Re: 3.0L Mercruiser Questions

MCarson, I think you have the wires to the coil crossed. I think that the purple, red/yellow wires go to the positive side of the coil. The black, gray wires go to the negative side of the coil. The purple could be the resistive wire, the red/yellow is the +12vdc wire. The gray is the tach, and the black is to the points. The tach is always connected to the negative if I remember correctly. Measure the voltage to the positive side of the coil when in run position it should be a reduced voltage.

Re: 3.0L Mercruiser Questions

ok new problem, same boat. I have some sort of unidentifiable, Rochester carburetor on this boat. It resembles a 2GC, but with much bigger venturies and a much broader bolt flange. I have tried to locate a rebuild kit, as the 2GC kit obviously would not work. The part number on this carb is 807504-6202, it has an electric choke and a 3 position horizontal accelerator pump lever. It is not a MerCarb. It also has a two piece float needle, the needle body is bored out, and fitted with a spring, which holds tension on the part of the needle that contacts the float. Strange to me. The engine serial number is 0c464657. any help would be appreciated.

Check out this website, look up your motor and then find your carb. I think they still have some carb kits for that carb.

www.mercruiserparts.com
