3.0l mers has no power

i have a 1987 mercruiser 3.0l today i finally got it in lake and it starts and idles like a champ at about 1000 rpm (a touch high i believe) and when i go into gear and give it a little bit of throttle it runs fine but when i give more throttle it will bog down and pick up i can only get about 2500 -3000 rpm and i have the throttle all the way down. boat will not even plain out possibly water in gass problem? bot sat for about 6 years and i think it had about half tank

I would definitely drain the gas out.

I suspect the carb will need to be rebuilt\cleaned. I just did it on my merc 3.0LX and it was fairly easy. Carb adjustment was a little difficult being a newbie, but i got through it.

Full tune up (plugs, filters etc etc) and catching up on maintenance (greasing & inspections) will help as well.

I'd let those smarter than me chime in with more info.
