Re: 3.0l OMC COBRA Outdrive question for a 1986 Glasport boat
Help: I have a 1986 Glasport 165RX 140 HP equiped with a 3.0l OMC Cobra that I lost the top half gears in the lower unit in. I need to replace as I do not want to scrap the boat out: but a full lower unit is worth more than the boat.
Does anyone know what the gear ratio is on this lower unit?
I want to salvage this boat, but don't want to spend lots of money.
Thanks,
Howdy,
You didn't just "LOSE" the upper gears!
This sounds like the oil level was allowed to become too low (leak) OR someone changed the drive oil (incorrectly......filling from the bottom etc) and the upper gears and bearings became uncovered. That destroys them quickly......within minutes.........
You're right. A "FULL lower unit" may be more than the boat is worth. But like Don said.......if you replace the "upper" ONLY, you will soon be replacing the entire vertical drive!
Your best bet will be to find a good used 3.0L drive..........OR to replace the vertical drive with an SEI drive kit.........(new with a warranty) That won't be cheap.
Nothing with a boat is cheap.
The hard truth is OMC has been out of business more than 10 years and It's getting harder and and more expensive to fix boats with OMC Cobra engines/drives.....and there will be a time when after-market manufacturers will stop making repair parts for them.
Sorry about that,
Rick
