3.5HP Sea King, late 60's, trouble finding info/manual?

Hello,

A couple years back I acquired a very well maintained 3.5hp Ward's Sea King from my grandfathers belongings. I am relatively new to the outboard hobby, but have come to enjoy these older motors immensely. I have looked up the serial #'s and can't seem to find one iota of information about this motor. I always pick up an OEM manual right when I get a new motor, but it seems that one may not exist? That being said, I know for sure that it's 3.5hp, air-cooled, and from the mid to late 60's (most likely 67, 68, 69, according to my father). I found the Clymer and Seloc manuals online that cover Chrysler's during this time period. So to wrap it up, these are the few questions I have if anyone would be so kind :D

1) Can I get an OEM manual for this lil' guy? If not, should I choose the Clymer or the Seloc?

2) I've got the motor running, but my father says that it seems to be much louder than he remembers, and it does seem to vibrate a lil' more than it should. The prop seems to be in good shape. Thoughts?

3) To be safe, I went with a 24:1 ratio on my mix. I used regular 2-cycle, as the motor is air-cooled and shouldn't require TCW-3. Am I safe here?

Thanks in advance for all of your help, fellas. This forum has been incredibly enlightening, and has opened up a whole new avenue for this hobby which I've enjoyed a whole lot!

Jesse

P.S. - I don't currently run this motor on a regular basis solely because I'm not 100% confident that it's good to go. I'd like to put it on a 12' Sea Nymph of similar age, but want to make sure it's shored up before I go running it across the lake. I like adventure, but not the "sit on the lake for hours waiting for a tow" kind of adventure :)

Thanks a ton, mrcrabs! I wasn't able to find anything on the host site, but I am a bit confused. I was under the impression that this motor, branded Montgomery Ward's, was manufactured by Chrysler? If I'm mistaken, I bet that's why I couldn't find a manual. I'm out of town for a couple of days so I can't check the #'s, but will be sure to as soon as I get back. We ::think:: we nailed it down to somewhere between 1967 and 1969, but with this new found info I'm guessing I'll have a lot more luck finding out just exactly what I have. I'll post some pics and the model/serial #'s soon, and I'll also PM ya with the like info to see if you might have the book I'm searching for! THANKS AGAIN!

Re: 3.5HP Sea King, late 60's, trouble finding info/manual?

Update: I learned a couple of important things this morning...

The first discovery is that it turns out that one cannot access that site (ebscohost) from a computer on a University network. It turns out that when I was trying to access the site I happened to be using the Michigan State network, which makes ebscohost dramatically different, not allowing a user to log in and only allowing the viewing of periodicals. Interesting...

I also learned that it appears my motor is a Chrysler indeed. Now I am not 100% positive, but when I finally was able to access the site I couldn't find the motor under the Clinton section. But when I went to the Chrysler section and viewed the "3 1/2hp Air-Cooled" link, it appears to be the motor I have. The diagram states that the motor was produced from 1966-68. Now it's hard to REALLY tell with a such a limited diagram and not knowing the numbers, but it's the right era, and it looks a lot like it....

That being said, I apologize for not doing my homework and checking the motor #'s before I left town. Really earning that "Cadet" stripe under my name! I never knew this hobby meant so much detective work, but it's been a blast! Do you happen to be at all familiar with this motor by chance?

The Iboats crew is familiar with them all,
F_R has been around for a hundred years or so and has the wisdom of the ages and almost everybody has junked a Chrysler at one time or the other :D

you may find it under Westbend,

Lol, I've certainly been in that shinking ship before.

Can't thank you enough for your help! And that reference site is certainly an amazing resource. I look forward to getting back and getting to work tuning this nice little motor up...by the book this time. It has turned out to be a good find, for it has probably touched the water fewer than ten times, but was maintained nearly monthly when he owned it because that's just what he liked to do.

Got home a day early to check the #'s, and I've found it. The link below is the iboats info page on her, but it still doesn't say the "make". The model# starts with VWB, so maybe Westbend as you suggested.

1968 3.5hp Sea King

That being said, I've got the manual and I'm very happy about that. By chance, does anyone know how I would go about getting parts? I can't seem to find the motor, under any of the makers suggested, on any of my regular "parts sites". Really all I would want is a carb. kit and a few seals here and there to keep on the shelf. Once I find some parts, I'll be golden!

Thanks again!
