So far I have the lower unit off. In order to remove the pump do I have to take out the horizontal shaft that connects to the splined prop shaft? And then take out the vertical shaft? I know the pump is bad...found pieces of metal and plastic on the top of it below a metal plate I removed. Thanks.

Hi GeeBee,
You don't have to remove either shaft to access the waterpump. It's under the nylon plastic cap on top, held on by two stainless (should be, anyway) nuts. You really should have a manual handy when attempting service of this nature...
- Scott

OK, thanks for the advice. I'll try to find a manual. I guess the pump just slides up over the top of the shaft. The thing sure is flimsy. This is the third one to be replaced. The other ones were done by the dealer for $179 each time. Thought I'd try it myself and save.
Frank

Hi GeeBee,
Third one replaced in how long a period... since new? (that's not bad) or since last season? (that would be bad).
Impellers don't last forever and depending on usage and environment they can be replaced every season to every 2-4 years. I'm generally on the 3-4 year schedule myself, but I'm always watching output to make sure everythings working smoothly.
Yes, the impeller just slides up and over the shaft. Care should be taken not to lose the impeller key, which may fall out when you lift up the impeller...
Be sure to grease the top splines before reassembly of the unit into the motor...
- Scott

Thanks Scott. We'll give it a try later today. I have a friend who has much more expertise than me that'll be here.
BTW as "chinewalker" you sound like a fellow sailor. I use the Merc. to push my 14 foot West Wight Potter. I also have a Minkota elec. motor. It's OK if the winds are light, but I prefer the gas engine if there's alot of wind and waves.

Hi GeeBee,
Actually, it's a term I got from racing powerboats. When you're packing some air under the hull and she starts to rock back and forth on the chines, it can be quite exhilerating - running the ragged edge...
- Scott

Got it now... was thinking about being heeled over to the extreme. I've been looking around and can't seem to find where to buy a new pump kit for the motor. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Frank

Hi GeeBee,
Sierra part number is 18-3054. Should be available at NAPA, West Marine, most marine discount stores, maybe even through iboats...
- Scott

OK Scott, the part has been ordered. I took the old one with me to make sure I get the whole enchalada. Cost of $63, which is less than the last pump from the other dealer.
My friend Chuck, the mechanic, will help install when he comes back through town in March. He races Formula Fords, lives in Seattle and usually races in S. Calif. We live in Redding Calif. about half way to his races.
Thanks for all your help.
Frank
