Just rebulit powerhead of my dads 3 hp lightwin. new rings, everything else looked good. Reassembled, very difficult to turn motor. Where did I go wrong. Just seems too tight. Anyone??
Did you have the recoil apart?
Do you have the connecting rod caps on the same rods they came off of?? Do you have the rod caps oriented correctly end for end (not backwards)?? Did you use an inch/pound torque wrench to tighten the rod cap screws and use NEW lockplates?? Did you tap the tapered dowel pins in first, THEN install and tighten the bolts?? Did you use an inch/pound torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the correct tightness?? Did you slop on too much sealer between the case halves and it got squeezed out into the bearings?
More to this mechanic-ing job than meets the eye, huh?
thanks for all the ideas.
i completely disassembled powerhead. including rod caps. Things looked good.
reassembled. Torqued with inch/lb per specs. still tight, nearly impossible to turn prop by hand. Removed new impeller. This time applied oil. Better, much better. Adjusted coil, seemed to be impinging on flywheel. now completely free. Ill try to start it tomorrow. What is the right fuel mixture, oil per gallon of 87 octane.
Yea, but I dont think it was the coils initially. Probably didnt lubricate the impeller properly.
I run my late 50's lightwins at about 20:1. They started out as 16:1 motors, back when they ran 30 weight non-detergent motor oil....
