Forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong place. I just picked up this motor off Ebay. I was wondering if anyone has any info on this motor. It's a Montgomery Ward Sea King 3 hp serial # is 65X617541. Was this motor make by Gale, OMC? Does anyone know what year model it is? Owner says it runs like a clock, but what should I do to it before I try to run it? I read somewhere that these motors use a lower unit grease instead of gear lube. I've never seen an ouboard with grease in the L/U though. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for rambling on, but also, what does the little white knob toward the bottom of the motor do?
That motor was made by OMC in late 50s or early 60s. I've seen them with SeaKing and Gale decals. I had a white Gale like it and believe it was 1959 vintage. That baby looks to be in excellent shape.

If you want to trade that motor for a 1940 SeaKing collector type engine in A1 shape let me know.

That motor has an unusual water pump. It's in front of the prop. Instead of a vaned impeller, it has a rotor (#550040). There's an eccentric on the propshaft that wiggles the rotor around and squeezes the water up into the powerhead. They're a very simple and durable design, but not very efficient. If you can find a new rotor, you should replace it. They shrink over time and get hard. Then they don't pump too well. Unfortunately they haven't been made in quite some time and any old stock will have shrunken and hardened as well. I got around that by machining a larger eccentric. If you get spray out of the ehxaust, you'll be okay.

The gearlube I believe is called 104...it's either a very heavy oil or a very thin grease maybe a mixture. Lubrimatic may still offer it. You can use gearlube. Check it often, keep a drip pan under it.

The magneto appears to be the same good old magneto they used for decades. Parts for that should be no problem. Other available parts would be sparkplugs, shear pins, recoil springs...that's about it.

If you can post the model number I can probably give you a year, but I'd say it's a 1958 (mod. GG-8962A).

The white knob is for adjusting the carb mixture. They were rather crude and needed constant attention. I don't see a choke knob, so turn the knob to the left to start (richen the mixture), and turn it to the right as the motor warms-up. Fuel ratio 24:1, but you'd probably be fine at 32:1.

Have fun with it. :)

Thanks alot guys for the great info. Any idea where I can get the L/U lube, this "Thin Grease"? I've never heard of or seen it anywhere, though I never looked before either. Thanks again, and I will post the model number as soon as I can.

I can't remember the impeller but thought it was the regular type. I looked at a manual for Gales and it said gear lube was 90w for engines before 1964...but it wasn't specific to the 3hp. If it is the concentric type it's the same as early Mercs (1940). That lube is called Lubriplate 105. I ordered it from Grubbs http://www.oldmercs.com/ . It is the lightest grease and the next grade is oil. This type lube is used because it won't leak out as easy.

Re: 3 hp Sea King (Gale?)

BillP or anyone who knows.

Is this the stuff I should be installing in the Lower unit? Is it fluid enough to install like any 90 weight gear lube? Can I heat it a little to make it easier to put in the lower unit? I don't have my hands on this motor yet, it's being shipped. Does it have the typical drain and vent plugs on the lower unit? Thanks for your help, great information on this list!

That's it. Consistancy and feel is like white litheum grease. It squeezes out of the tube like tooth paste and is easier to use than 90w oil because it won't drip. Remove the lower drain screw and upper vent screw. Put the tube nozzle inside the lower hole and squeeze until the 105 exits the top hole. No drips, no errors! :D

I was probably wrong about 1958. I'll go along with 1956. Had a 25Hp with the same scheme and it was a '56. We put it on a little speedboat that was left in the rafters of a marina I worked at. Flipped it on a wave at a whopping 25Mph. That was an interesting experience! The boat survived, too.
