On my 87 88hp evinrude i recently replaced the rectifier/regulater it charged real good for a while now it doesn't seem to be charging very well.I would go on a 20 or 30 mile round trip WOT most of the way and it will barely get my volts up, to 12.8 and the rectifier/regulator is really hot when you touch it.ny ideas as to what would cause this?

Re: 3 wire rectifier

Just the round three wire rectifier. Thats not a regulator.
Suspect one of the diodes is shorted.

Test it according to the instructions in the Engine FAQs.
See the Repair and Maintenance index for the Engine FAQs

But if you use a digital multimeter use the diode test range not the ohms ranges.

Could be a dodgy battery or wiring fault but tesing the rectifier is easy and is a good place to start.

What should i look for as far as what would cause a rectifier to go bad?
