I went to an estate sale the other day and picked up a what appears to be a new old or very very lightly used 1985 Evinrude 30hp powerhead. The guy owned a small engine and outboard shop years before and had retired keeping only a few items to tinker with.
The buyers there were all after the furnishings and collectibles in the house, the outboard stuff and tools went untouched. I bid uncontested on most items with most bidders likely not even knowing what they were looking at.
In the end I came home with a full craftsman tool box, two tubs of OMC outboard tools, boxes of new parts and two power heads, one is clearly marked E30ELCOA on the freeze plug, the other is an early 70's 9.5hp power head. The reason for me buying the 30hp power head was that I was hoping it would donate a starter and bracket since I run a 1983 35hp on my 16ft Mirrocraft
The current motor is recoil start only with no charging system. (J35RLCTS)
Is a 1985 30hp a compatible power head? Or at least can I swap over the starter and bracket? Maybe all the parts under the flywheel as well to gain battery charging too?
The way its set up now, I have to pre-charge a deep cycle battery to power the lights, fish finder, and trolling motor. The original motor has no charging system..
The only controls I have from the seat is throttle and shift control. The push button kill switch and choke are on the motor. To start or stop the motor I have to leave the driver seat ands step over the U shaped bench to reach the motor. I do carry a 2ft long piece of broom stick that I use to kill the motor without getting up though. As I get older, its getting harder and harder to step over that rear bench or to pull the recoil on that motor. More than once I spent the whole day with an aching hand after several restarts on the water. The 35hp pulls super hard, but once its running its great. Far better than the 1978 25hp it came with when new.
What years were these motors basically the same? I know the older models were larger, but what year did they change? I run a 1975 25hp on my 14ft boat and that's a different motor all together. My buddy has a 1974 35hp and that's a much larger looking engine with a heavier lower unit and no through exhaust.
