I have been working on a 1982 Sunray 14 foot boat with what I beleive is an 1982 Chrysler 30 horse engine.
It was put away 20 odd years ago and not properly serviced at that time.
It actually runs and seems to work well in a bucket of water.
Dosent pump much water however i think I can repair that (corrosion in water tube)
My question is which models are similar to these. The 20 and 25s or the 35 and 45s.
I may be shopping for a lower unit and would like to know ahead of time.
There is a crack in the upper front of the gearcase. No oil in this area just an empty cavity. On a newer larger motor this would be the speedometer pickup area.
May not hurt anything but if I buy this one I should start gathering some spares.
I should mention that the boat has been inside all these years and at most has a hundred hours on it. Also sits on a galvanized roller trailer.
Thanks for reading.

I have the 30 and 35 Hp 30 Hp has the plugs at an angle and is about 488cc whilst the 35 has plugs straight out and 588 cc .Your 30 HP is similar to the 25 /20 but not the one with the dynastart.....Water pump housings are a pig ..corroded ..I have had success with cheaning and then wiping the interior with epoxy resin. It is worth taking the exhaust cover plate off ...mine had two holes 1 1/2 in x 1/2 just filled with crud...there is a channel to the rear in the plate which has no water flow but is vented to the water ...cannot be flushed hence corrodes ...filled mine with epoxy putty ..very successfull....
Most importanat mod is a tell tail and be sure to use real thick battery cables.

Re: 30 Chrysler electric start

Well after spending a little time with the little motor I have got it humming along just nice. The poor water pumping was easily cured by simply putting the motor in a deeper barrel instead of a bucket. I should really know better than that.
Should be okay now for a short cruise around the cove at the lake. If that works out I will bring it in for a full service and maybe buff the boat a bit and perhaps even paint the floor a bit and add some carpet.
Thanks for the tips. Chris

Re: 30 Chrysler electric start

Back again...got a new impeller from a local shop run by a friend.
Boat is home in the yard ,plan on making it mine. Cleaning it up a bit this evening and got curious about the size of it.
Its small, real small for a Sunray. And only rated for a 40 horse motor. measured it and found its 13 feet long and just 5 feet wide.
Haden't really paid much attention to it before. Should really go with that 30 on it. An upgrade to a 40 would make it sweet indeed.
Thanks again Chris...will put up pics tommorow evening if the wife will co operate.

FYI..........I have a 1967 Chrysler 35 on a 14' fiberglass. I get 25 mph out of it. Just so you know what to expect.....maybe.
