My search for a boat continues, and I came across a nice 2012 Crestliner Kodiak 16 in amazing shape. The only concern I have is that it's got a 30 hp outboard on it. The hull is only rated for 60, but this is half that. Is 30hp too small for that size boat?

Well, it depends on what you are going to use the boat for. Motor is too small for watersports, but OK for fishing. It should plane the boat, and run in the 20's MPH, I would think.

Our 14 footer was bought as a family boat to take camping. It was rated for a 25 and we ran it for many years with a 9.5. Inside the boat were 2 semi-fat adults and 2 pre-teenagers. We didn't go too fast, but those days were the happiest days of our lives. The boys learned seamanship and how to be fine adults. Nobody complained that all the other boats were leaving us behind in their wakes.

If you NEED to go fast, get rid of the 30 and buy a brand new best-of-the-line 60. Its all about family and priorities. You need to decide what's important to you.
