I have 2 year old Magnavox HDLCD television.

About a month ago it began to stop turning on when I used the remote or pressed the power button on the TV.

Now this is what happens:

I press and hold the power button until the little light in the button turns green.

The green light flashes on and off (2 times per second), during this time the tv is making a high pitched pulsing sound, like it's trying to come on; however the screen stays black. After about 20 minutes of this the screen begins to "blip" by turning from black to a millisecond flash of a lighter color, then black again. It will blip a few times.

10 minutes later the green flashing light goes solid then goes off.

I hit the power button again and the green light flashes for a few minutes and then goes off.

Then I hit it again and the TV comes on. Picture is perfect, no problems.

Do these TVs have starters or ballasts or something like flourescent lights do?

Any help would be appreciated.

No starter or ballast. What they do have is a main power supply that coverts ac to dc to feed the main board. There is a control board that displays the picture and an inverter board that provides power to the CCFL lights. The most common problem with LCD tv is no picture caused by bad inverter or controller. Won't power up would caused by power supply or main board. From what you described it sounded like there are a combination of problems.

Agreed.

In general there is no Hight voltage in a LCD. Except for the CFL bulb. Sounds like a bad starter, Or ballast. The tv my infact be sensing this problem and turning it's self off..

Hey guys, sorry for taking so long to come back.... my computer got a virus.

When it rains, it pours.

Are these items reasonably repaired by a qualified shop or are these the "death blow" to my TV?

For a Magnavox its probably a death blow. At my job I see hundreds of TV's that don't work....and usually anything around a year old has obsolete or expensive parts that really don't make them worth repairing. You can always get an estimate and see though if thats a route you want to choose. I depends on the problem and what is invovled in the repair. At least it doesn't sound like a bad lcd panel......those are almost certainly a death blow.

This is a reason I always recommend a service plan. If something does go wrong they are very nice to have. Many people scoff at the price, but $150 to $200 up front for 4 years of gauranteed service is worth it when you are about to trash a TV thats barely past the mfg warranty. With some of the better brands though there are many fewer problems.......unfortunately in my expirience Magnavox is definately not one of them.

Unplug the TV for at least 60 seconds, you need to reboot the processor. This happens to mine every so often and this is what Magnavox told me to do. And if it doesn't work all ya lost is a couple of minutes,,,,
