About 2.5 years ago, I purchased a used 1999 27 foot Rinker with very few hours on Merc Cruiser engine with Bravo III props. Really enjoy boat but have already replaced the spline shaft connected to outdrive two times. The first occurred late last summer because of inadequate greasing. Since this was a costly repair, I've ensured that this type of maintenance is completed. But to no avail, the spline shaft was stripped again a few days ago. I had just recently had the boat in to have the shifting cable replaced. The mechanics had the spline shaft exposed when they had to reattach the outdrive. They even indicated to me that they had difficulty reattaching the outdrive. I had just taken the boat out after this repair was made when the engine cut out on me again. I didn't hit anything and I was operating the engine at a very low rmp. I do not understand how this could have happened again? Could this stripping have occurred if the outdrive was not realigned properly? Or do I just have a "lemon?"
