302 I/O stalling

I have a 73 Sea Ray I/O with 302 888. I just replaced the old engine with a used complete 302. Everything went well at home running it off the garden hose. The engine started and went into gear without problems. When I try to put it in gear in the water it stalls instantly and then it?s difficult to start. Any ideas motor or drive problem?

did this used motor go in with all new tune up parts?
if not.... then that's a good place to start.
if it did, then check start by checking your compression.

My WAGuess is,...

The lower shift cable has bit the Dust,+ needs replacement....
