I just recently purchased a used 30hp evinrude outboard. I had it shipped from florida to Pa. The guy i bought it from said it had no leaks. He shipped it without any gear oil. I have it sitting in my basement on an outboard stand. I still have not put oil in the lower unit. It now seems to be leaking a brownish black thin oil from behind the prop. Should this be something to be concerned about?????

It may just be unburned two cycle oil residue. If so ,no worries.Once you get it filled with the proper gear oil ,let us know if it leaks. The fact that he shipped it with no gear oil makes one wonder though.

OB
Some shippers require oil drained from lower unit. A shipped engine should always be checked for gear oil on arrival.

I realize that sponson.Personally when it comes to an encased lower unit gear lube ,I find it somewhat overkill a precaution yet understand that they have to draw a line when it comes to shipping hazards.Just seems ironic that these same companies will ship plastic containers of oil thast are much more easliy ruptured.

yes you should be concerned. You should do a pressure test of Lower unit BEFORE you add oil. resealing the LU is not difficult either if necessary.

I use a pressure gauge connected to clear tygon tubing with a tee. One end of the tygon has a plastic fitting that screws into LU to pump oil in (comes with lu oil pump for $6 at walmart) , I added an o-ring on it to seal it better, I use rubber tip blowgun from air compressor in other end of tubing, pressurize LU to 15 psig, then pinch tygon tubing and clamp shut with vise-grips.
