Hi, I'm about to buy a boat that comes with a 28HP Johnson which works fine. The owner is also throwing in the 33HP Evinrude because he has no use for it. The problem with it is that it hasnt been started in a very long time and the engine doesnt turn. There is some movement to it but not enough to get a full crank out of it. The man says the engine may be seized. My question is ...what could be the possible problems to this and what are the solutions also in terms of $$. I know it's not to specific for a model number but I dont have the boat yet and dont have the privilege to get all the info. Thanks for any help.

Re: 33 HP Evinrude circa 70's

Welcome to Iboats, meneermalik!

The 33hp was produced from '65 to '71, but I think only until 1970 in the States. They didn't change it much during that time.
The first order of business is to determine what's locked up - the engine or it's lower unit. The way to do that is to remove the lower unit. Until then, everything's up in the air.

If it is the engine that's seized, it could be just a little rust in one cylinder, or it could be that the crank, bearings, rods, etc, are all toast. If that's the case, best to look for a new, used block (if the rest of the outboard is in good shape). Either way, you're going to have to tear it down for inspection.

If the 28hp that comes with the boat is the '62-'64 one, then many parts from the 33hp fit it. You may want to keep it or parts of it just for replacement. If it's the '80s 28hp, they're not at all the same.
