Hi Guys,

Was wondering if anyone can tell me if the starters are the same for a 35 hp Johnson and a 40 hp Johnson ? I have a 58 35 hp and need a starter and a ignition switch if anyone has one to sell. Thank you !
Mike

The answer to that question is yes and no. Generally speaking, the starters for the late fifties 35hp motors and the later (60s) 40hp motors are the same. This is also true of the starters for the 28hp model and the 33hp model.

What you may see, however, is that some of the older ones had only two brushes in them. You can tell the difference between the two by the length of the starter and the number of screwheads in the sides - two for two brush and four in the four brush model. Either one should work.

They are more or less the same--sort of. However the length varies and requires different support brackets on the bottom end. The shortest ones didn't even have support brackets. Nor were they as powerful.
