Need help wiring my 35hp Johnson. I have six wires coming from the control box: Red, Green (heavy gauge and split to connect in 2 places), Black, Black, White, and Brown (heavy gauge).

I need to hook up my key switch and choke. The choke has two terminals, and the key switch has the following 4 terminals: ST, IGN, BAT, ACC.

I am guessing that the choke gets a red and a green, and that BAT gets another green, but what about ST, IGN and ACC?

Can anyone help me get this wired correctly?

Thanks.

Oh. A Private Message.

I thought PM meant Parts Motor, and that you just told me that my motor sucked so bad that it could only be used for parts. I feel a lot better now!

Thanks for your help TD. Glad I made you laugh.

I got your messages - and your wiring pic is a whole lot clearer than mine.

Did tash tell you that you have the wrong key switch? I suppose he did, since he blew up his coils that way.

No, but based on our communications, I was beginning to suspect that that was the case. What kind of key switch should I be using?

Thanks tashasdaddy and F_R.

The diagrams were awesome. I found the exact ignition key switch for $25and it worked perfectly.

Re: 35 hp Johnson wiring (1958-RD-19C)

I too just purchased a 1958 RDE 19C 35 HP Johnson. THe only problem is that the wiring harness was not on the engine. How or do I even need this wiring to start the engine with the rope start. I am thinking that the wiring needs to be on in order for the circuit to open and let the engine start and also to stop it right? Along with lighting, and guages right? I really just want to fire this thing up to see how it runs. Looks like it was running not long ago so maybe it will be OK??? All help or advice is greatly appreciated with this new adventure I am on. Thanks to all in advance who reply.

You can rope start and run that engine without the wiring harness.

You've added your question to a thread that dates back to 2007. Whenever you have a question, it's best to start a new thread, containing all the details of what you want to know, with a title that indicates the model number and nature of the question.

That way, people will see the new question and open the thread to read it and help you.

Thanks for the info. Appreciate the tips for submitting a question. I will be trying the motor out tomorrow in the barrel, see how it goes. I'm thinking that I would be able to stop the engine by using the choke?

choke or pull the plug wires, also you can turn the throttle all the way down and the ususally die.
