Can anyone tell me anything about the older model 350 mercruiser with 260HP. It's a 1983 model. Were these engines reliable. It has since been rebuilt and sits in a 23FT formula cuddy cab. I am thinking about buying the boat but am unsure of this engine and it's performance. Thank you for any help with this.

I agree with you bondo..the chevy 350 in my opinion is the most popular and in my opionion the best engine ever. I was just unsure if the marine version ws the same. This is the 350 model 260.

Re: 350/260 info

Well today we put that boat in the water. The one with the 350/260hp. It seemed to run ok with the exception of lacking a little power, but it has been sitting for a while so I was not to worried about that. I did however hear a kind of tapping or clicking which seeemed to be coming from up near the water pump area. It is not a valve tap or anything like that and it was not consistent. I know this is not a whole lot of info but maybe someone can tell me if this is something serious or just a minor problem or maybe a water pump going bad. I don't want to buy a boat that will just sit there waiting for repairs. Thank you

IF you don't know what is causing the noise, how could you say if it was a serious problem or not?
It could be anything from a minor piece of the alternator belt hitting something to the timing chain hitting the timing chain cover.
Take the belt off and turn things, look at things, etc.

no I checked the belts and looked around and I didn't see anything at all hitting. It sounded like it was an interior noise, as I said sounded like it was coming from the water pump. Somebody told me that there is a rod inside the water pump the that would make that noise. It seemed to get louder as we opened her up more. At idle speed and on land it sounded perfect.
