Check you linkage. Problem could be the lock out switch that prevents you from starting in gear.
-------------------------------------------------
There are old sailors and bold sailors but,
There are no old, bold sailors.

Re: 350 chevy cut off when put in reverse

If it's a mercruiser outdrive..

put the shifter in forward gear/engine off.
look at the interupter switch on your linkage and make sure the little tab is sitting at the BOTTOM of the vally on the switch.

If it's NOT sitting in the bottom of the valley with the switch in forward your linkage is out of adjustment.

The switch stalls half the engine when you go to pull it out of gear as the barrel on that switch comes OUT of the valley..

If the switch is not adjusted right the engine won't temporarily STALL when coming out of gear and thus you will have problems getting the thing out, plus your engine WILL stall once you are in neutral because NOW the barrel is in the wrong position causing the switch to stall out the engine.

A quick test to see if the switch is even working is to start the engine, then move the rocker linkage so that the barrel comes up OUT of the valley on the switch.

If the engine stalls you know the switch is good.

It's a good idea to do the switch quicky test first to determine if all you need is an interupter switch.... especially if you have not messed with the shift linkage at all.

Hope this helps you out some..

PB
