Search this forum for "automotive". There were several detailed discussions recently regarding this issue.

D. Ocean
Pompano Beach, FLA

Yes.. Block, heads, internals, all same-same...

Carb, distributor, alternator, waterpump, starter are all different and must be certified for marine use..

Thanks for your information so as I clear on this I can use the block out of a truck or car as long as I use all other parts of my marine engine

You can switch blocks, but as you said, you need to switch the accesories certainly, (carb, starter, alternator, etc). The only internals that may need switched over would be the cam - it would be a marine grind. (If you actually use your old cam be sure to use the old lifters in the order in which they were removed, or better yet, get new ones). You will need to replace the freeze plugs with brass ones. You will also need a marine gasket set - or at the very least, marine head gaskets. The other gaskets would interchange.

Try bolting a C-6 tranny from a 460 BIG BLOCK to a 351C,, won't happen,, Every Ford mag i've ever read Refers a 351c as a small block, Mustang monthly ect. even Caroll Shelby refers this motor as a small block

RMAC

Big block or small block not withstanding, they are quite different animals.

yes they are and , none of the internal parts will bolt on to a windsor block, with the exception of the heads, with a aftermarket intake.

RM

I pulled a 302 out of my truck and installed a 351C. It bolted up no problem. I would want to be sure that the drive could handle the extra horses though.

The Size of the Block.................... :D

Ford has used More bolt patterns than All the other manufactures,..... Combined.....
Unlike Chevy, Which for Years, used 1 bolt pattern for All it's engine......

Re: 351 windsor switching blocks

Just to help clear up the Ford interchange thing.....
A Quick Rundown...

The smallest BIG BLOCK will be the 332 FE introduced in 1958 as the engine family topped out at 428ci...

The largest Small Block will be the 400 335 Series as it began as a 351, considered to be a small block...

Bellhousing patterns...

221/260/early 289-five bolt...later 289/302/351W/351C-six bolt...

All FE's and early MEL's the same...

351M/400 uses 429/460 pattern...

Ninety Degree Engine Family...221/260/289/255/302/5.0L/351W

335 Engine Family...351C/351M/400

385 Engine Family...370(truck)/429/460

FE Engine Family...332/352/360/361EDSEL/390/406/410/427/428

FT Engine Family...330/361/391

MEL Engine Family...383/410EDSEL/430/462
Sooooo,
The 351W,+ the 351C, Share Only their Bellhousing bolt pattern........

It's Still Not an Option for robertog........
I stand Corrected........ ;)
