Hi. Just bought a boat with this motor (35el76g) electric start.Have found a 35hp pull start on sale for $50 with lower unit problems. My motor goes but other than test firing has not been used for 2 years. As I know nothing about outboards, thought it may be a good idea to buy it and pull apart just to learn.I have an original manual purchased on e/bay.Would their be enough interchangeable parts between these two motors, and do you think it would be worthwhile.Thanks.

Getting a parts motor for $50 is always a good idea. Your motor is 34 years old, and parts will go bad/wear out/break.

Some advice though, the manual has enough info in it for you to get to know your motor plenty well. I would get the parts motor, put it in a corner in your garage, and use it as needed for troubleshooting and replacing parts. you can drop the lower unit, investigate what is wrong with it, and maybe even have a 2nd working motor if it is something simple!

A motor in pieces is just that, parts in a box. But a complete motor is a great reference in case you want to try a repair out or just reference what things are supposed to look like when you get too deep into fixing yours.

my 2 cents.
