I have a 1996 Evinrude 35hp (3 cyl) with a problems running at higher rpms
(above 1/2 throttle). It runs fine for a while and then suddenly dies
or goes back to idle. It can then sometimes be revved back up again
but not always. It is always possible to start it again if it has died.
I've changed the fuel filter and the spark plugs with no effect. I've also
tried to pump the bulb while accelerating but with no effect.

Any ideas?

Check power pack and fuel system for air leaks.

Unless it's a VRO issue or an overheating problem, it sounds like a carb or fuel injection issue (depending on what you have). On a carburetor model, your symptoms could indicate a clogged high speed jet. Make sure you are running the right fuel mix (50:1) with fresh fuel and TCW-3 oil.

(I don't think the 35 is a three-cylinder model, is it?)

It's a "Elan" edition, 3 cyl with separate carbs and separate coils for each cyl.

/d
