I picked up a Mercury 35hp Oil Injected motor today in what appears to be pretty decent shape. The things been sitting for a long while but it's got no sign of saltwater use and good compression.
Where can I find the model number on one of these?
I don't see any number tags on the bracket area at all.
It's a 20" shaft motor, says 35 Oil Injected on the side, and has a red stripe down the middle of the Mercury stripe. The cover is three piece, tin band, end cap, and top cap. It's a remote control motor, with no recoil, and apparently used a remote oil tank.
The guy kept the tank and controls for his new motor and just swapped out the motor.
It's got 135 psi on both cylinders, has good spark.

Were the oil injection systems on these reliable? Or should I convert to manual premix?

Look for a round plug on the motor with the serial no stamped in it. There are many VRO's still out there working just fine, including my 1994 Merc. You only hear about the ones with problems here.

Found it, B297133, from what I see it looks like a 1988?

All I have is the motor, no oil tank, no controls, but the controls are round 8 pin, no biggie but where does the motor get it's oil? I'm used to Johnson/Evinrude with the oil hose going right to the motor. This has no such line? My 1995 Mercury has its oil tank on the motor.
This uses the newer style pin type fuel connector too, not the bayonet style like on my older motors.

I've been trying to get the lower unit off of this thing all evening, no luck, it drops down about 3/16" and won't budge. On my 40hp, I have all 4 bolts and the one nut off. I can't tell if its stuck on the shift linkage or if the splines are stuck in the crank.

Re: 35hp outboard ID?

Here's a pic of my 89. Had it for a little over two years. I don't remember it saying "oil injected" on the cowl but probably just never noticed. Anyway, if yours is the same as mine it came with a remote oil tank called an AutoBlend. These malfuctioned often enough that people just took them off and premixed. The one on my motor had been removed years before I got the boat/motor and was wrapped in a plastic bag in the storage area in the front of the boat. I don't know whats involved in going to premix but I'm sure there's someone on this forum who can tell you. You may not have to do anything at all.

My motor ran just fine on 50-1 premix. Started good, ran good, pushed my 15 1/2' 600 lb Sylvan along at 22-23 mph, and didn't give me a lick of trouble. I traded it in on a pontoon boat my wife just had to have. AutoBlend went with it still wrapped in plastic.
