I was wondering if a 36 lb thrust would be enough to push my tri hull around. I believe it is a 17 footer. It would carry a couple passengers and fishing gear. Thanks

NO! A light 14' alum maybe. That is a heavy fiber, no? In wind and rougher water no chance. On a sheltered pond with skinny people OK! I have a 55 0n a medium light alum. 5 to 10 wind will take everything you have with a 36. get a min of 55# auto pilot or Ipilot you will not belive the amount of fishing you will be able to do. Used ones are around $300.. Best thing I ever bought for my boat for sure!

Ok Thanks so much for the reply. I wasn't sure how big of a motor I would need. I recently bided on a motor on ebay and it was a 36lb minn kota. (Hopefully I get out bided now). I am hoping to find a cheap *** one for around 100 bucks. I was thinking/hoping a 46 lb would work. Don't really have the money to spend 300 bucks on one. And yes my boat is a fiberglass. That is pretty much my situation.

Do yourself a favor, cut grass, paint a house, rob a bank.... but don't waste money on something too small!!!!! Wait until you have the money. Spread the cost over 5 or more years you will use it, and the pleasure you will get from it.. IT IS CHEAPER THAN THERAPY!!

$!00 is not going to buy a 55# bow mount auto pilot or I pilot motor. The difference between using on of these and a hand operated one is worth the added money no matter how you slice it. I fish 10 times more with one, look ma no hands!!!!

Haha thanks for your advice. Now I have a better idea on what I need to be looking for. Only question I have is what does the auto pilot and I pilot really do? Is it necessary to have?

Autopilot is the older version of the power drive v2. It has a compass that controls the motor direction without any help from you. If you had used a manual you would see that you are constantly moving it back and forth to control the boat. You can set a direction and it will keep going in that direction until you want to change it. Craigs list has them for sale all over the country. I pilot uses a gps to plot a course instead of a compass. Minn kota makes a very nice unit and they support there stuff very well
