I was wondering, I have the opportunity to pick up a 36v 81 pound trolling motor for 100.00..However, I just don't have the room to put a third battery in the rear of my boat...Now I have seen trolling motors that switches from 12 to 24 to 36...is it possible to run this motor this motor like I would a 24v...meaning can cut a wire or put a switch on it or something

without knowing what 36 volt trolling motor your looking at, no one can say.

have you looked into lithium ion trolling motor batteries? you may have room

why not buy the right trolling motor for your needs?

The practice of providing a switch to select 12V or 24V on some motors ended years ago. After all, what's the point. If you need a 24 volt motor you don't run it on 12 volts. Although I've never seen a switch selectable 12/24/36 volt motor that does not mean they don't exist. If you only need a 24 volt motor, buy one. If the 36 volt you are looking at has only two wires (+36 volt and -36 volts), it is not switch selectable. In fact you need to do nothing to it to run it on 24 volts. Just use two batteries in series. But again I ask, what's the point. A 36 volt motor needs 36 volts to provide 81# of thrust.

Most 80lb trolling motors come in 24v now. If you need a trolling motor I would look for one of those instead. I wouldn't want the added weight of a third battery if I didn't need it.
