I have a 5.0 GL Volvo Penta SX (2000) in a Cabin Cruiser and have just ordered a 383 stroker long block (marine engine of course). I am going from 220 hp to 430 hp. Can some please tell me if I have to change the engine coupler or anything else? I am just looking to be able to pull a skier or tube with my boat, with the 5.0 I can hardly plain of in a reasonable time. I am not looking for top speed. I realize I have to change my prop. but I will do that after I put the boat in the water and I have my speed and rpm's figured out. I have a power prop on it now. I apologize if this is a repeated question, but i looked for a thread for this no luck.

Does the 383 you are getting have a 1 piece rear main seal? You will be able to use the couple if it does. If it doesn't I'm not sure what you'll need to do, I am not familiar enough with VP to know if and early coupler for the 2 piece seal will mate to an SX drive. The flywheel wont work unless the engine you are getting is internally balanced. What are you going to use for carb and intake?

Both engines are vortec engines. Im pretty sure it will bolt up. What I am worried about is will the existing coupler be strong enough? I plan to replace it with a new one but will the stock. Coupler for the 5.0 be ok? I have an edlebrock 600 and plan to use the stock intake manifold.

Ayuh,... The couplers are pretty much all the same, regardless the Horsepower...

flywheel make sure u use the right one. u dident say if it was balanced or not if not a 454 flywheel will work. and a 600 carb for 430 horse might run lean go bigger or rejet and try

Its not internally balanced but the mfg. assured me it will work with my existing 5.0 flywheel they are both vortex engines. I purchased a new coupler just for the hell of it. Got it out might as well. I will check with my mech. see if he can rejet the 600. Thanks for the advise. I am buying a crate motor so most likely 430 hp over exaggerated.

Numbers were probably transposed ;) 340hp is more likely. A true 430hp 383 would be too performance (top speed) oriented for a cabin cruiser.

Also, be aware that many engines are called vortec, which usualy means they have a set of vortec heads, it doesn't mean it has to have a certain vintage crank or seals, roller cam, etc. All those pieces are up to the builder.
