3L Timing

Hi everyone,

First time up and hoping to get a little info.
I've got a 1994 Bayliner with the Mercruiser 3L in it.
Just finished a full rebuild and want to set the timing on it.
I've read the instructions on how to do the timing for the EST setup that it has but I've come up with a question before I even start.
It states that I am to jump the white wires at the distributor and then bridge the shift cutout wires, my question is, wouldn't that cause the engine to shut down since that is the purpose of the cutout switch and by bridging the wires you are duplicating the process?
Of course by joining the two White wires I am guessing that it over rides this process but wanted to know for sure.
Any insight to this would be greatly appreciated.

The instructions you read are correct, that puts the control module in base timing mode so there is no advance.

Re: 3L Timing

Now I am scratching my head.
Warmed it up this morning, connected the two white wires, bypassed the shift cutout switch and it died like I had wondered about.
Didn't have time to check anything out as this nasty thing called work was beckoning me.
Is this an indication that the jumper wire at the distributor is not making full contact? Or is it possible that the module is on the way out?

Yes, the engine will die when you disconnect them. Go ahead and bypass the shift interrupt switch and start it back up.

Problem solved.
One of the white distributor wires had an open in it.
