Looking to put on some hardware on the hull of my 13' whaler clone. I don't have any 3M 4200. I have checked local hardware stores and they only have 5200, is there a substitute I can get away with so I can get my boat in the water? example GE 100% silicone, maybe?

Hello m8..

No sillycone please..

What kind of hardware ? cleats, vents, rail bases .. ? You said hull .. so if its below the waterline use 5200.

If its small based hardware 5200 will be fine.

I prefer the 5200 anyway. The 4200 will turn yellow, the 5200 will not. They also make a 5200 quick dry formula. I have found small tubes at Lowes and Home Depot. West Marine carries the larger sizes.

The other brand of marine sealants is Boat Life. Check for Boat life Boat Seal for above the water line sealing. I have used it on cleats, and a couple of years later, when I wanted to change the cleat, it did come off without ruining the gel coat. Some stayed behind, but it was easy to scrape off with a razor blade. Its clear, a polysolfide and industrial silicone combo specifically for marine use. It stays soft, but doesn't come off easy. I also used it to seal the motor bolts on the outboard in 2003. Still sealing good.
