Anybody have practical experience of this adhesive/sealant …. going to be fitting come plywood behind hull as backing boards for through hull fixings.
There are 2 variants 3M 5200 and 3M 5200 Fast Cure

On 3M web site both variants have exactly same statement for cure time:
"tack-free in 48 hours, and cures completely 5 to 7 days."

So what is the difference, naming of the product suggest faster cure - but tech description does not agree.

Someone got lazy where you found your information.

3M specs 5200 at 48 hours and 7 days. 5200 Fast cure at 1 hour and 24 hours

So Fast Cure will give me 10-15Min after putting on wood - to Position & fit, before it starts to set. I can temporary loosely clamp up, but leave tightening until 48 Hrs.

Not sure what your trying to do.
Fast cure gives you 60 minutes to position and fit.

Why would you need to let fully cure before tightening up the clamps?

I use either 5200 fast cure or 4200UV on everything.

For attaching backing plates, I think a marine epoxy (e.g., Marine-Tex or PC11) are much easier to work with and will give a predictable (and quicker) bond than 5200 or 4200. I would use one of the 3M products to seal the hole when installing the thru-hull fitting, but the epoxy is really good for setting backing plates.
