I am remounting the bracket for my helm seat to the top of a large fish box/cooler just behind my center console. The bracket is mounted by 6 bolts that go through the top of the box. What is the best sealer to use to prevent water from seeping through the bolt holes and rotting out the plywood core?

I had to replace the plywood core in the top of the box due to rot and don't want to have to do it again. The sealer that was used in the original installation was some type of fairly good quality silacone but obviously did not do the job.

100% silicone is what thay put on fish tanks. If there is a lot of vibration, you will always have to reseal every so often. Another alternative is urethane caulking used as a premium window caulking. Nothing can beat it for quality ...and it's high price! :D

I agree with Bubba, 3M 5200 is tops! However, unless you have a LOT of time to wait, pay a few pennies more and get the faster drying 5200.

Re: 3M 5200 or What???

we use 5200 and 4200 pretty exclusively for bedding material. it is the best out there.

rarely will we put silicone on a boat. usually only on hatchs you may want to remove at some point (easier to cut than 4200), intake manifold corners, etc..

word of warning about the white fastcure 5200, there have been yellowing issues with the product. its nice having a father that works for 3M :)

5200 is the stuff!! Be sure you want it to stay for awhile, the stuff can be tough to get loose once it dries.

Does anyone have any experience with that stuff that claims it can be used to remove 5200?

SoLittle,
I have personally used 3M 4200 (Fast Dry) for a number of projects without any negative issues. It stays slightly elastic and can be removed from surfaces with a bit of work (mostly cutting & rubbing). The 5200 formulation is similiar but gets a bit harder with age - and I hear will destroy mating surfaces (fiberglass) if you attempt to remove it. WOW some bonding !!

erie_guy :)

Well I ended up using the 5200 but might should have used the 4200. I have no experience with it but will give it a try for the next like project.

Re: 3M 5200 or What???

Last year I took apart a boat I applied 5200 on in 1985. It was hard and brittle but still stuck well to the glass and wood and did yellow just a tad. I used a chisel and it cracked off in broken pieces...no flex left at all. I have no idea how long it took to get this way but it is definitely under 18 yrs.
This makes me wonder how well those 20 yr old boats are doing that used 5200 for the deck to hull joint. Offshore in a blow might crack that seal.
