Instructions on tube says that once opened, it must be used within 48 hrs.

What happens beyond 48 hrs? Something so horrible it must not be mentioned?

Seriously, if it has not begun to harden, is it still safe to use, or is some unseen chemical transformation happening that makes it bad to use after 48 hrs?

I've had some almost a year old that was fine to use, but I had to cut the tube open on the bottom cuz the top was cured.

Just a hint: 5200 cure when exposed to water (humidity in the air). People report that in the desert, it take forever to cure. So, any low-humidity environment (in a zip-lock, in the freezer) will add shelf-life.

I've used it after a couple years when stored in the freezer and it has been just the same as new (once warmed up) then I put it back in the freezer... have some in there that may be 4 years old or so and I'm sure it's still fine
