4.3 185hp Won' restart when hot

I've run into a problem with my 1988 merc. 4.3 185hp. It starts perfect on the 1st crank if it has sat for some time (overnight). It idles fine and runs smooth. The problem is that when I cut the motor after its warmed up and try to restart, it just cranks over as if there is no spark. The starter works fine, and its getting gas(carb rebuilt last season, doesn't seem to be a problem with the choke). It just cranks and won't fire. It happens randomly not everytime, but when it does happen it won't start for about an hour. When it doesn't happen, the motor fires on the 1st crank. The wires are pretty new, the cap looks good, I haven't checked the plugs yet but since it runs very smooth when started I don't think they are the problem. Any insights, suggestions would help. Thanks.

the only way you will be sure is to hook up a meter to your coil and see if loses power when it wont start once you no that you can work from there<br /><br />it could be a bad connection or a bad resitor wire failing when hot or even the coil can fail when hot<br /><br />tommays

Listen to Tommays he is right,the same thing was happening to me after it warms up and I try to restart, it just cranks over AND THERE IS NO spark.After messing with coil I removed the gray wire on - side of the coil and well ah she started right up everytime.This wire controls the tach and the shift intrupter switch.I hope this helps, <br /> Don<br /> <br /><br />180 mercuriser

hey dfgtye<br /><br />Check your ignition timing. My 165 hp. Merc did the samething and I found that the ignition timing was too advanced. I set it to the proper advance and It worked great.

well i know you said its getting fuel and im just throwing this out there because it happened on my 4.3 and others all people i know at the lake just a suggestion does the motor start after about a hour. mine does it because the fuel boils in the carb for a minute after shutting down then it will take some cranking to start or after a hour it starts right right up
