4.3 electric fuel pump comes on with key off

I recently launched my boat and upon my first stop by the dock to check up, I realized that my fuel pump was buzzing away with the key off. My boat is a 1999 Crest Savannah i/o pontoon with the 4.3 carbureted with electric fuel pump, and an alpha one gen2 drive. The serial number is 0L337877.

It seems to happen at random and is not dependent on the battery selector position 1 or 2. I even cycled the key a bunch of times to try to recreate it. I have it unplugged for now but would like to fix it right. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Andy

Ayuh,..... I'd remove, clean, 'n hook back up the wirin' to the starter,....

The tiny terminal on the outboard side of the starter's solenoid powers the fuel pump, when the starter is engaged,....
If there's any cross-connection there, that could cause yer problem,....

Otherwise the fuel pump is powered by the ignition circuit, through an oil pressure switch on the bottom post-side of the motor,...
Really no way for a cross-connection there,...

Bondo- will do.

Scott- I thought this could be a possibility, but is the other side of the oil pressure switch hot when the key is off?

nope, should be switched power

purple is switched ignition. purple with yellow is switched ignition - hot only when cranking.

standard SAE wiring colors.

Ok, so even if the switch was stuck closed, it couldn't cause this issue with the key off. I'll dig into that starter wiring.

I believe I found the problem! The large gauge cable on the starter was rotated down and barely touching the small post carrying the purple/yellow. I moved it up and away and also slid the boot over the small terminal that was not in it's place. It's nice to luck put and have a simple fix occaisionnally.
