Our mechanic says the seawater pump bearing on our port engine is noisy, the casing is getting very hot and he recommends replacement (although he changed the impeller?).

Is this a job a reasonably competent DIYer can do? I have the schematics but can't see exactly how it bolts on to the engine.

Also, there are two parts listed for the pump on the 4.3 and it seems there's an option. The VP diagram says P/N 3812693 replaced the older one. I've found other sites which seem to indicate that P/N 21214599 will also fit and I can find these cheaper. Are they interchangeable? What's the difference?

Why couldn't this crankshaft assembly be machined to accept a three bolt mounted Johnson or Jabsco crankshaft pump?

Rid yourself of the OEM style pump!

The Johnson pump runs about $150 complete when on sale.
Same basic internal design, same flow volume, etc, but it would be a bit longer in length.

I suppose with enough machining and experimentation you could mount about any pump up to it.
Since he ask how hard it was to replace the pump with the same kind, and it his boat and he can see the pump, I would have to assume he isn't up for a project like that.

Correct :) Why make life harder for myself? I can't access the Volvo Penta store from Australia (probably in a vain attempt to protect their local dealers from embarassment - think 50% more) but I assume that P/n 212.... Isn't a direct replacement?

21214599 IS the correct number. The pump didn't change, just the part number.

Thanks Don, I appreciate the advice. There's plenty of access to the front of the engines on my Regal so it shouldn't be a hard job.
