4.3 hard to start.

I have a 4.3 and it is hard to start cold. but when it warms up it will start just fine. if you go and sit for an hour its still warm but its hard to start again. any ideas?

If it's a carbed engine........You have a bad electric choke.

Mine had the same problem.

Here is a test.

When engine is cold. Take off flame arrestor and turn the ignition key on.
Watch the choke plate in the carb. If it does not start to open up little by little until it fully opens (about 2 min. or less) you have a bad choke,

yes it is carb. but its not electronic it runs on vacum it looks like to me. ill have to try that. thanks

What kind of carb? 2 barrel, 4 barrel? Weber 4 barrels are known for the bowl leaking out the fuel due to leaky plugs.

4 bbl. so is it flooding it then? what do i need to do just rebuild it?

First, I'd make sure the choke is working. Pull the flame arrestor and see if the choke is closed. With the choke you have it should have closed itself when the engine cools down. If it's closed move on the the leak possibility. Check out these two prior threads:

I found that mine had the issue of a dry bowl after it sat for a few days. Pumped the throttle and it was dry. For now, I installed a momentary switch to refill the bowl. This works until I rebuild the carb in the off season and re-plug the holes. Hope this helps...
