I have a 1989 4.3L that was marginally maintained by previous owner. Now having 2 starting problems that have become progressively worse:

1. Engine cranks very slowly and gradually picks up speed and then starts (usually)

2. Recently lost all power when turning the key. Checked fuses and wiring near the engine and power came back on just from moving wires. Went back to turn key and power shut down again.

As an inexperienced boat owner, I appreciate any suggestions on where to start so i can try to minimize time and money spent.

Sounds like the following should be chkd
Battery condition
battery terminals,plus grounds

Chk the condition of the main wiring harness connection in the engine compartment.usually merc puts a hose clamp around that connector.look for corrosion on the pins.
Ignition sw
Starter.

Rich

You could have other issues to deal with as well..

The electrical items outlined prior must be checked throughly for sure plus you may be experiencing vapor lock as well..

If the drag occurs ONLY after engine is warmed up, shut her down and look down inside the carb to see if you see fuel puddling down in there on top the intake..

If so, you may have a stuck float in your carb or the fuel needle may be stuck or misadjusted causing an excess of fuel to be dumped in the carb after shut down.

If the drag occurs all the time and you've found your starter to be in good shape check to make sure your distributer hasn't loosened up and moved off timing..

Just some more thoughts on your situation..
good luck to you!
When you shut the engine down
