4.3 LXGen+ 1997 0k009133 Won't Start

good compression, spark, gas. will not start. timing is set. the only thing i can think of is there is water in the gas. i drained the tank 3 weeks ago. today i disconnected fuel line @ carb and pumped a gallon into a clear container to let it settle, and see if it contains H2O.

Will it turn over if you pour a little gas directly into the carb?...<br />It should at least try to turn over....<br />If you change the water separating fuel filter, this should eliminate a water in fuel problem...<br />How about a separate 1 gallon container with new gas in it?.....JK

pull all the plugs, wet, tuned engine over checked each cyl for water. leaving cyl open over night. gas has been sitting for 5 hours no sign of water yet. spark jumps 3/4 of an inch. it purred yesterday on muffs. the tank has 25 Gal of new gas in it. one thing is i have the bow higher than i had before. maybe causing any water in the tank to settle at the pickup. enough for today. time to cover it.

Wet with what? Water? Gas?<br />If you tap the plug on your hand, water will show up as a bead of water. Gas will just spread out and make a wet spot on your hand.<br /><br />If the engine was running fine when you shut it down, I find it hard to believe that it suddenly got water into the carb, fuel pump, all the lines and everything else while it sat there not running and just refused to start due to water.<br /><br />Please answer these questions.<br />1. Was it running ok when you shut it off? <br />2. When you tried to start it this time, did it sputter a few times, try to start once maybe, or just crank and nothing? <br />3. Did you look inside the cap to see if there was moisture buildup?<br /><br />Even if the engine is flooded (with gas), it will not fire. But all you have to do is just open the trottle wide open and crank till it starts.

Need more info... What was happening prior to shutdown? Was he running w.o.t and suddenly it quit? If you tried Don's method of using a remote tank with known good fuel and delivery, the spark is good, it leaves ignition. Maybe you need to check there....modules can act wierd. Had the discussion with the tech at the dealer...he swore it was a go no go module. Symptoms were: hard to start, intermittent cut out at high rpm and occasional severe missing at mid range. Bought a new module, ran like a champ. Just sayin there are still a lot of possiblities, more info would help.

When you say that it has spark, how are you testing this ? If you have a gap-type tester, and have checked every plug wire...that is valid. If you have one of those "neon-glow things" or if you only tested one plug wire....that is not valid.

this is what i have so far this morning. can not try to start yet as i respect my neughbor( night working Policeman) i've been running it or muffs at 1500, ran smooth would idle back to 750 no prob. no sputter on xcel back to 1500. went to start yesterday, spit sputtered and then just cranked over. starting proceedure: 1 pump of throttle to set choke. would usually start 1st bump. no nothing. remove throttle cable at carb use hand held started buttom. watch gas . this AM the sample gas shows no sing of water. tested spark on all, by putting old time light spring in wires, and letting it jump to exhaust. compression #5 80 rest 90-95 cold/ w throttle and choke held open. thats where i am now. will clean plugs and reinstall today and try to start. thanks.

Now you put a For Sale sign on it. Why. It's kept you busy for months and used up lots of money, probably a few blood spots on the gelcoat...... just like a boat is supposed to do. Then after all the water in the oil, new heads, dirty lifters, wrong risers, wrong information, etc, you finally get it running. Then one morning you flood the engine and now you put it up for sale when the hard parts done ??????

i get for free, did the project, had a rewarding, if frustrating time. i towed home a '79 18'Bonita Deep V wednesday. just boat & trailer. it is a hull that i really like, had one before, and can be set up more to meet my use. i will use the Mercruiser until it is sold, then buy power for the Bonita. i also have another boat, i used for fishing, for sale.

won't start again. did not pump 1 time as didn't want to flood. turn key, turned over, no go, 1 pump back to 1/4 throttle no go.

If you didn't pump it, you didn't set the choke....I would open the throttle wide open & crank it.....Be ready to back it off ....JK

Still sounds like flooding....I would make sure that the choke is operating properly.....Those plates should be open....JK

left screw driver holding choke open, and throttle linkage wedged wot. all afternoon. still no go, check # plug damp not wet, #1 spark jumps 3/4 inch. timing 8* btdc as per manual. edit: does this distributer have a nylon gear, that could be bad. i didn't notice when i had it out.

Are you checking the spark from the coil or the plug wire. Ive had a rotor short to ground under the cap.good spark at the coil but no spart at the plug.

plug. twice now when i was going to the water it has done this. God Forbid if a buyer wanted me to start it.
