Hi All.
Got a 1988 Sea Ray w/4.3 Merc Thunderbolt IV.
I'm replacing the thermostat, and am a bit confused by what I received in my kit versus what I see in Merc Service Manual #7 in the pics.
I ordered Sierra Kit which contains 18-3551, the correct thermostat for my engine based upon what I've read.
The pictures in the manual (I have the new style cooling system with the check balls) show the thermostat going INSIDE the housing, and the sleeve going on top of that; a flat gasket on top, and then the flat housing cover to finish it all off.
The thermostat I have does not fit inside the housing. (Although I've lost the sleeve - need to order one), I don't understand how the sleeve could go on top of the thermostat and then have the flat cover finish it all off (unless driving the bolts squeezes the thermostat into the housing up against the o-ring in the bottom?
Did I get the wrong thermostat in this kit? Am I missing something?
