Bought a 89 sea ray with new 4.3 crate engine. Previous owner installed the engine but never started it. It sat a couple years and I bought it. I took it to the lake and notice it had alot of blow by coming from the valve covers, so I figured the rings were not seated good and I took it easy to let the engine get some break in time. Took it back to the lake today and same thing-ran awesome but lots of blow by. I'm thinking the cylinders were rusty where it sat soo long without being started and the rings will never seat now. I'm thinking I will take her apart and see about some new ring and a hone probably.. What you guys think?? And what is the differance between a marine 4.3 and a truck 4.3?

Ayuh,... Not much,.... Welcome Aboard....

I'd do a compression, 'n leak-down tests before ya tear it down,...

Harda say what yer gonna find inside,...
It might be salvageable with your Plan, or it might take more...

I wouldn't write it off just yet and spend a ton of money if you can get away without. If it's truly a new motor I woud be inclined to drain the oil and refill with a straight weight non-detergent oil (for break-in) and run that engine hard for at least 50 hours to try to seat those rings. Nothing to lose other than the cost of that oil and a filter, and you may get away lucky.
