4.3 new starter old bolts big problems

Ok here we go. 89 sunbinrd with a mercruiser 4.3. Old starter was fried. Got a new one and the original bolts do not pull it up tight. I pretty much have about all of the scored part under the threads showing and the starter has slop in it.

With this being said......what is a good starting point for amount of shims to put in??? Ive tried stackeing a few washers and gotten close but still no dice. Any help would be appreciated thanks

Ayuh,..... Don't shim the starter, Shorten the bolts,....

Is it the same kind of starter?
If it's the newer smaller style they often need shorter bolts.

The only soluti0on is to use the correct bolts ,If you do add anything to the bolt use a solid piece not a bunch of washers
