Hello, I am new to the Volvo Penta I/O as I recently bought a 2004 Stingray (with the Volvo 4.3 GXi) to replace my previous 1996 Stingray which had the 4.3 Mercruiser. I'm confused on the oil filter as some show more of a filter cartridge and others like this post show more of the standard can oil filter style. I looked over my engine quickly and I don't see any "can" style filter except for the fuel/water separating filter. Can somebody straighten me out on the filter for my engine? Appreciate the good posts here. Thanks

From a MY2000 4.3GL motor perspective, it is on the right side as you face the crankshaft nose. Way back down and around a corner. Behind the pedestal that mounts the engine to my boat.

It is the can style filter which hangs down. I have used Fram and now Mobil replacements. I don't see the need for the VP OEM part in that particular place. It may be a good idea if a person's boat lived on the water, or on salt water for that matter. Mine spends most of its life on the trailer.

It’s way at the back port side. Usually a longer filter than the average GM oil filter

Your 4.3GXI should have another letter after the I, maybe an A B C??
That helps ID your motor.
The Standard GXI-A has a remote filter on top the motor?

What's the other #s on the motor?

oil filter boss on the motor is down low on port side of motor. most VP's have remote filters, so follow the lines from the adapter on the block to the remote oil filter which should be near the port side manifold.

the fuel filter should be down low and forward on the starboard side of the engine.

I've used both Sierra filters and the Merc/Quicksilver filters on the 4.3 engine. The standard mount can be a tough spot to reach on some boats. Note that if you have a remote mount...it takes a different filter usually than the standard mount filter...and the standard mount filter for the 4.3...is not the same...as the 5.0/5.7 engines....

Oil filter is remote mounted up on the upper port side. Should be right next to the alternator
