I've just installed, a new marine long block in my 1989 19ft seaswirl runabout. The old engine wasn't winterized properly, and cracked the block/heads/exhaust manifolds. I went through the engine top to bottom, checking the head bolts torque, main, and connecting rod bearing clearance.
I installed all of the old accessories..intake,carb,alt,starter,waterpump,power steering pump, etc.
Broke it in on the muffs with about 20 mins of run time @2300 rpm. Running pretty good after timing was set right. Good oil pressure at all times.
Took it out on the lake last night for the first time, and brought it up on plane as quick as I could. Then continued to vary the RPMs and not run it at any higher than 3/4 throttle. Did this for about 2 hrs, I will continue to do this until break in period is over.
(about 20 hrs)
I did briefly hit the throttle hard and noticed it would not come up above 3200 RPMs. Any Ideas??

Make sure throttle is opening all the way. Make sure exhaust shutters are free.

Re: 4.3 OMC not able to exceed 3200 RPMs

The throttle is definately opening all the way.
Going to check the fuel filter at the carb, and
fuel/water seperator tonight.
I'm not sure what prop I have are there some #'s
on it that tell the pitch and what not ?
I will say this, two years ago I performed the same procedure with the long block replacement, and cheaped out with a junkyard block/crank/pistons. I did use the original marine heads and cam/lifters/pushrods.
Needless to say I spun a connecting rod bearing,
and seized it.
It did run well before this happened, and would top out at about 46mph @ 4300 rpm.
I took my chances and learned the hard way.
This time I went with a reputable builder, with
marine specs for the longblock. My point is, that the drive/prop are still the original...so
it should perform the same.

I looked at the Prop it has 14 1/2 which I think is the diameter, and 19 mwr which I think is the pitch. Does this sound right.
Thanks in advance for your help.
